I cracked the code!

Recently, I was riding in my car and fiddling with an electronic device capable of translating waves of electromagnetic radiation into audible sounds. The existence of this device, heretofore referred to as a “radio,” is discovery enough. But that’s for another post. The discovery I made came when I listened to some of those radio waves and was posed a question by someone communicating over this radio:

I-N-D-E-P-E-N-D-E-N-T do you know what that means [indecipherable, possibly a bastardization of "man"]?
I-N-D-E-P-E-N-D-E-N-T do you know what that mean [sic, should be "means"]?

At that time, I could not answer the question. The communicator, who was later revealed to be a person who calls himself “Webbie”, offered some further clues:

She got her own house,
she got her own car,
two jobs, work hard, you a bad broad.

I would like to announce today that, despite the many challenges posed to me (in the form of improper use of grammar), I have cracked the code.

“I-N-D-E-P-E-N-D-E-N-T” means “independent,” which (according to Merriam-Webster) means “not dependent.”

I’ll take whatever awards you’re handing out.

An interesting discussion about homosexuality in the Bible

jesus.jpgI have not read all of this back-and-forth e-mail discussion of gays and the Bible that Newsweek posted online after Lisa Miller’s cover story on the same thing. That’s because I have a job and things to do and it’s long. But the first few paragraphs I’ve read and the others I’ve skimmed over suggest to me that I should read it, as the people in the discussion…

On the pro-gay marriage side: Bill Wylie-Kellerman, a United Methodist serving as pastor at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Detroit. His sparring partner: Dr. Barrett Duke, vice president for public policy and research at the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, an agency of the Southern Baptist Convention…

…seem intelligent even though I don’t particularly care what the Bible says about gays.

Anyway, after the jump there’s a sample to get you interested…

Judge rejects dismissal of gay pride group’s suit against Birmingham Mayor

Central Alabama Pride’s suit against the Mayor of Birmingham will go forward, a least a little while longer. A federal judge has denied Mayor Larry Langford’s request to dismiss their suit against him. According to the Birmingham News, Judge Karon Bowdre is giving Central Alabama Pride until Dec. 22 to address the “deficiencies” raised by Langford.

Gay penguins to become surrogate penguin daddies

Gay penguins that were expelled from a zoo colony for stealing eggs have been given an egg from a straight penguin couple who have had trouble hatching eggs.

‘We decided to give them two eggs from another couple whose hatching ability had been poor and they’ve turned out to be the best parents in the whole zoo,’ said one of the keepers. [Emphasis mine]

There were apparently some protests from animal rights activists when the two gay male penguins were moved to a separate habitat (they were stealing potential baby penguins, after all).

Makes me think that maybe that tap dancing penguin from Happy Feet wasn’t too straight.

Gays, and marriage, and religion

Over at The Daily Dishmarriage a reader has written in to expound on Sullivan’s comments regarding marriage as a civil right and a religious rite.

Of Christian fundamentalists, the reader writes…

their faiths themselves are defined by the people they exclude: the unbelievers, the unsaved (or let’s be blunt: the “damned”), the always-demonized Other: without that division, that exclusion, their entire theology, indeed their entire worldview, collapses: a theology of inclusion is anathema to them, just as a politics, a sociology or even a science of inclusion (evolution) is anathema.

And irony of ironies, it is precisely the opposite of the message the Christian Savior tried to bring: that salvation is found only through love, through inclusion, through openness of mind and heart and spirit, through, ultimately, trust — that this world, with all its difficulties and pain and imperfections, built through evolution, and including endless Others, is as it should be, as it was intended to be.

The whole post is worth reading (in the end he mentions a curious case of a preacher shunned by the evangelical community for preaching that no one goes to hell…interesting theology). In a pure sense, I don’t care what the churches think about gay marriage. I think marriage should be a purely civil rite, and if you want to have a preacher marry you as well, then that’s fine. But obviously (as we see from Mormon involvement in Prop 8’s success) they have an effect on what America thinks about gay marriage.

I’ve never really understood the arguments against gay marriage. Read the rest of this entry »

Throwing shoes is never cool

Bush deserves a lot of heat, but I don’t know if I approve of shoe-tossing. He does a good job dodging this Iraqi TV reporter’s thrown shoes though. He has great reflexes. Check it out here (h/t Hotair):
