Recently, I was riding in my car and fiddling with an electronic device capable of translating waves of electromagnetic radiation into audible sounds. The existence of this device, heretofore referred to as a “radio,” is discovery enough. But that’s for another post. The discovery I made came when I listened to some of those radio waves and was posed a question by someone communicating over this radio:

I-N-D-E-P-E-N-D-E-N-T do you know what that means [indecipherable, possibly a bastardization of "man"]?
I-N-D-E-P-E-N-D-E-N-T do you know what that mean [sic, should be "means"]?

At that time, I could not answer the question. The communicator, who was later revealed to be a person who calls himself “Webbie”, offered some further clues:

She got her own house,
she got her own car,
two jobs, work hard, you a bad broad.

I would like to announce today that, despite the many challenges posed to me (in the form of improper use of grammar), I have cracked the code.

“I-N-D-E-P-E-N-D-E-N-T” means “independent,” which (according to Merriam-Webster) means “not dependent.”

I’ll take whatever awards you’re handing out.

Gay penguins that were expelled from a zoo colony for stealing eggs have been given an egg from a straight penguin couple who have had trouble hatching eggs.

‘We decided to give them two eggs from another couple whose hatching ability had been poor and they’ve turned out to be the best parents in the whole zoo,’ said one of the keepers. [Emphasis mine]

There were apparently some protests from animal rights activists when the two gay male penguins were moved to a separate habitat (they were stealing potential baby penguins, after all).

Makes me think that maybe that tap dancing penguin from Happy Feet wasn’t too straight.

The three-day film festival will showcase features, documentaries and short films by new and established artists and offer attendees the opportunity to view topics of interest to the GLBT communities, as well as to interact with filmmakers and documentary subjects in attendance.

So if you live in Alabama, or hell, in a neighboring state, drive on over to Birmingham to check out the SHOUT film festival. It’ll be a blast. You’ll at least see your share of shirtless men (and maybe even some shirtless ladies) on screen.
